What's in Your Water Heater
Warranty for your water heater start on the day your water heater was installed. Of course that's if you sent in the registration card that came with the water heater. Otherwise the manufacture will only count the warranty period based on the month and year the water heater was manufactured.There are a few different warranties that some manufactures give.
6 year 9 year and 12 year. All have a 1 year labor and parts warranty and after the first year only the water heater and any parts to the water heater are covered under the warranty. The customer is responsible for any labor costs.
What is covered under the warranty for your water heater?
The first year covers everything parts, labor and the water heater as long as the problem is due to the water heater or any parts that become faulty under normal use.
What is not covered under the manufactures parts and labor warranty?
Repairs made by anyone other than an authorized warranty service Rep.
The manufacture also has the right to refuse covering the warranty if the water heater. Was not installed by a licensed plumber, manufacture requirements were not met or the water heater fails to meet plumbing and or electrical codes.

A properly maintained water heater can save you money on your utility bill.
The water that we get from the water department or utility district is treated with chemicals in order to insure the water is safe to drank and use. One of these chemicals that is added to the water is liquid Calcium. It's add to the water in order to insure that people who drank the water receives some of the calcium we need. One of the down sides to the liquid calcium being added to the water supply. Is when the liquid calcium in the water is heated inside a water heater small traces of the liquid calcium become a solid form creating crystals that build up inside the water heater. Now these is not harmful or dangerous. Accept to the water heater. for as the liquid calcium starts to heat up and forms crystal these crystal deposits start to form around the heating element on a electric water heater and flake off and fall to the bottom of the water heater. Some small pieces do get through the water heater and into the water lines. And some time will cause a faucet to run slower if this happens. Remove the aerator from the spout on the faucet and clean out the deposits that have built up on the aerator screen. Electric water heater can produce more calcium build up in the bottom of the tank then a gas water heater. Gas water heater dispenses the heat through the center of the water heater which creates the water to heat more evenly and burns off more of the calcium and less of the calcium deposit doesn't settle on the bottom of the water heater. With a electric water heater that uses heating element to heat the water. The liquid calcium collects and builds up on the elements and as the calcium builds up on these elements the water heater is having to work harder in order to heat the water. As the calcium builds up on the heating elements much of the crystalized calcium falls off and settles in the bottom of the water heater. This is one of the reasons that the water heater manufacture recommends draining and flushing the water heater once a year. With a electric water heater I recommend that the heating element be replaced every two years. Which can help reduce the cost of heating the water.
Q: What is a T&P valve and where is it located on the water heater?
A: The T&P valve stands for temperature and pressure relief valve. It is located either on the top of the water heater or on the side.
Q: What if I can't shut off the water valve for the water heater… because it won't turn or won't shutoff all the way?
A: If the shutoff valve won't turn, try using channel pliers to turn the handle on the valve. If the shutoff valve will still not shutoff the best place to shut the water off is the water meter. You will need a water key which can be purchased at any hardware store.
Q: What if I can't get the water to drain out of the drain valve?
A: the best advice is to call a licensed professional plumber.
Q: What is a Thermal expansion tank and what dose it do?
A: A thermal expansion tank. The water heater manufacture's recommend having a thermal expansion tank installed on all new water heaters and is required by the Clarksville Gas and water and the Clarksville Building & Codes department.
The purpose of a thermal expansion tank is to allow the heater water inside the water heater to store the additional expanded water to be stored until the pressure is equalized. When Water is heated it expands. Many water utility districts are using a system that is called a closed system which does not allow the water coming in to be allowed to flow back into the main water system. It's basically the same concept as a back flow system. With out a thermal expansion tank when the water heats up and starters to expanded and has no where to go. It must release the pressure some where and that is part of the reason there are T&P valve installed on all water heaters. The T stands for Temperature and the P stands for Pressure if either one of these reaches it limits that the T&P valve can with stand. It is designed to open and release the pressure and avoid the water heater from taking off like a rocket.
Q: Why did my old water heater not have a expansion tank and I never had problems with it leaking out of the T&P valve?
A: New rules and regulations have made the water heater manufactures to build water heaters that are more energy efficient and with these changes newer water heaters are more sensitive to the pressure and temperature changes.
